Valanginian climate cooling and environmental change driven by Paraná-Etendeka basalt erosion

چکیده
The Valanginian Weissert Event (ca. 134.5 Ma) has long been linked to emplacement of the Paraná-Etendeka large igneous province (LIP). Although several Mesozoic crises were triggered by volcanic CO2 emissions and global warming, causing oceanic oxygen depletion, featured climate cooling limited marine anoxia. Here, impact silicate weathering on environmental change during is investigated presenting first osmium isotope (187Os/188Os) data sets for late Berriasian–Valanginian interval. These records document a possible rise in nutrient runoff latest Berriasian, followed switch basalt erosion Valanginian. high weatherability LIP basalts enhanced despite coeval warming. This documented cooling, with consequent micronutrient potentially aiding ocean fertilization, highlighting mechanism linking formation that was uniquely different than other crises.

Mercury enrichment indicates volcanic triggering of Valanginian environmental change
The Valanginian stage (Early Cretaceous) includes an episode of significant environmental changes, which are well defined by a positive δ13C excursion. This globally recorded excursion indicates important perturbations in the carbon cycle, which has tentatively been associated with a pulse in volcanic activity and the formation of the Paraná-Etendeka large igneous province (LIP). Uncertainties ...
متن کاملIrrigation cooling effect: Regional climate forcing by land-use change
[1] Regional detection of a greenhouse warming signal relies on extensive, long-term measurements of temperature. The potentially confounding impact of land-cover and landuse change on trends in temperature records has mostly focused on the influence of urban heat islands. Here we use a regional climate model to show that a regional irrigation cooling effect (ICE) exists, opposite in sign to ur...
متن کاملClimate change, flooding in arid environments, and erosion rates
Although regional climates throughout much of the world appear to have become more arid in late Cenozoic time, sedimentation rates, and therefore presumably erosion rates, have increased. For sustained erosion of elevated terrain, at least where glaciers are not the major erosive agent, rivers must incise. Therefore bed-load transport by rivers should be a rate-limiting process in erosion. Theo...

Executive Summary This Environmental and Climate Change Policy Brief has been written as an input to the Poverty and Development Assessment that Sida is undertaking as part of the preparation of a revised Swedish cooperation strategy with Zambia. It aims at briefly presenting key environmental sustainability challenges and opportunities (including climate change and disaster risk reduction) in ...
متن کاملAustralia's Dengue Risk Driven by Human Adaptation to Climate Change
BACKGROUND The reduced rainfall in southeast Australia has placed this region's urban and rural communities on escalating water restrictions, with anthropogenic climate change forecasts suggesting that this drying trend will continue. To mitigate the stress this may place on domestic water supply, governments have encouraged the installation of large domestic water tanks in towns and cities thr...
